Featured in PARADE magazine in Sunday newspapers across the country, Numbrix has followed the success of other popular newspaper puzzle games, such as Sudoku, from print to the iDevice.
On its face, Numbrix (a mash-up of the words Number and Matrix) is a fairly simple game that requires no math skills other than the ability to count to 81. The player is presented with a 9 x 9 grid of squares, some of which are pre-filled with numbers in the 1-81 range. Your task is to fill in the rest of the numbers to create a chain that wraps around the grid. The chain must only follow horizontal or vertical paths. Each puzzle requires only logic to arrive at the unique solution, and a timer measures the speed with which you complete each puzzle. When you’ve correctly completed each puzzle, the numbers light up in snake-like fashion from 1 to 81 to indicate your success. You will then be asked if you’d like to submit your time to the global leaderboard for comparison with others.
Numbrix comes pre-loaded with 149 puzzles across three levels of difficulty: easy, medium, and hard. Numbrix will also check for new puzzles when connected to the internet and download any available puzzles to your iDevice, so even if you get through the pre-loaded puzzles, you will receive fresh puzzles weekly. At this time, we have 175 puzzles loaded on our iDevice.
Graphically, the game has a clean interface. The grid squares are not too small, nor will you need to do much scrolling. A translucent number pad pops up at the bottom of the screen to allow easy number input. When viewing the puzzle from its top line, the number pad covers the last two rows. Tap a square toward the bottom of the viewing space and the puzzle will autoscroll down to allow clear view of the bottom rows. To enter numbers, simply tap any empty square and punch in the number on the number pad. Repeat this process until all squares have been filled in.
We had two fairly minor concerns with the game. Our first is simply a preference issue. It would be nice if there was some way to drag your finger and auto-fill short chains of numbers with the next numbers in sequence. For instance, there are times where you might fill in 6 numbers in a row along the grid border. It would be nice to drag and auto-fill the numbers 42-47, rather than key in 42, tap the next square, key in 43, tap the next square, key in 44, etc. This could either be a multi-touch feature (hold auto-fill button with one finger while dragging the range with another) or perhaps a keypad button that you tap and then drag to highlight the range. Once you lift your finger, the auto-fill would enter the next sequential numbers and the single tap method would be re-enabled.
Our other concern was with the high scores list, though the Threemagination team has already addressed it. It appears that the high scores may have been compromised by people replaying the levels after solving them and keying in the numbers as quickly as possible based on their knowledge of the solution. For instance, the top score on many puzzles was about 1 minute, 10 seconds. With a 9 x 9 grid and 24 pre-filled squares, the player must enter 57 unique numbers into the grid, most of which are two-digits. This means that the top scorer was fully completing one square per second (typically requiring 4 taps each). This amount of time left no room for logical thought and problem-solving. The high scores list was, in effect, a fastest-finger list. The development team recently implemented some controls to prevent the aforementioned form of cheating. We hope that this change gives a more accurate representation of how quickly players are able to complete each puzzle without prior knowledge. We applaud the developers for moving so swiftly to reestablish the integrity of their product.
Threemagination has finally given us the opportunity to take our beloved Numbrix puzzle out of the newspaper and onto our iDevice, and they have implemented it very well. There is plenty of replayability, and the downloading of new puzzles keeps it fresh. Typically, Numbrix is priced at $4.99, though at the time of this review, the price has been cut to $2.99, a terrific deal for this 5-Dimple gem.

Dirt Moto Racing, an action-packed ATV racer released by Resolution Interactive, recently roared into the app store. A terrific follow-up to Aqua Moto Racing, their previously-released, jet-ski-infused racing title, Dirt Moto Racing takes the torch and powerslides its way into our adrenaline-fueled hearts.
Dirt Moto Racing features both Career and Single Event mode across 3 levels of difficulty. Career mode allows you to race in 8 tours, each with 4 possible locations (British Columbia, Death Valley, Toronto, and the Florida Keys) whose quintessential environment-types allow you to race a forest landscape, a desert scene, a dirt track, or a beach terrain, respectively. The unique properties of each locale will, of course, affect the handling of your ATV, requiring different strategies to achieve success. Races are 3 laps and pit you against 5 other riders, with 3 selectable AI levels. There are two types of races in which you will compete in career mode: traditional racing and checkpoint racing. Traditional racing takes place on a fixed track. Checkpoint racing has no fixed track. You must race to different checkpoints in a fairly barren, open environment. Location of the next checkpoint is indicated by an overhead arrow. The location and direction of all checkpoints is mapped out prior to the race, so if you are a quick study, you can gain quite an advantage.
Single Event racing contains all of the tracks from Career mode, unlockable by achieving top scores on the same tracks in Career mode. There is also an elimination mode where each race eliminates the last place finisher until one racer outlasts everyone, a checkpoint mode as previously described, a sprint mode for racing against a timer, a freestyle mode for performing stunts, a time trial for racing against your own fastest times, and ghost play, which allows you to download the ghosts of former Top Racers. There are also customization options available for your rider, including outfit, ATV, and gender, as well as tuning points which are earned by medaling in Career events. Top Speed, Acceleration, Steering, Grip, Brakes, Shocks, and Lifts are the areas to which tuning points can be applied, vastly improving these all-important aspects of race physics. There are also 21 unlockable achievements that can be earned through the course of racing.
The graphics are terrific with a smooth framerate. Though not overly detailed, there is enough to keep the game moving and get a good sense of each location. The soundtrack is very good, containing 12 original tracks and realistic engine/ATV sounds. The controls are extremely well done, using a combination of touch controls and the accelerometer. Tilt to steer and control your in-air positioning when getting airborne. Touch controls take care of everything else: braking and acceleration (unless you enable “cruise control” for auto-acceleration), boost for additional speed bursts, camera view, and stunts, which replenish your boost potential.
Stunts add a terrific element to the gameplay, and their implementation is handled very well. As you race over a jump, you may see a red, yellow, or green button appear on-screen. By holding one of these buttons and swiping up, down, left, or right on the screen, you can perform one of 12 different stunts. You can also swipe without including one of the colored buttons to perform one of 4 mega-stunts. As mentioned, stunts are important to build up your boost so that you can accelerate past the competition or get that extra edge when racing against the clock.
Our only real complaint is that, at times, you can get confused as to your positioning and direction on the track. We found ourselves powersliding in a fairly barren terrain and not knowing whether we were coming or going. Dirt Moto Racing includes a feature whereby if you go too far off of the track, it automatically resets you in the proper direction on the track. The feature is nice, but at times feels a bit touch, as you don’t have to go too far off of the track to trigger it. Otherwise, we loved all aspects of this title.
While there are plenty of racing games available in the app store, few are of the ATV/off-road variety, and Dirt Moto Racing stands out as a worthy competitor to any and all challengers. With a deep Career mode and plenty of freestyle-type events, you’ll have plenty of reasons to keep coming back for more. The $4.99 price tag is certainly justified by the outstanding gameplay, local and online leaderboards, and tons of unlockable elements. Resolution Interactive has created a game that, in our opinion, outshines its older, water-based brother to pop a 5-Dimple wheelie across the finish line.

Oregon Trail, a reimagination of the classic Apple II game, has been brought to the iDevice by Gameloft. While keeping true to the gameplay of the original, Gameloft has polished the rough edges and added some fun mini-games that create an enjoyable experience for nostalgic adults, as well as a younger generation who may not be as familiar with this little blast from the past.
As in the original, your family is trekking across America. You choose your profession, your wagon type, your pace, the time of year you’ll leave, and the names of your family members. The only thing missing is your initial shopping spree where you determined how many oxen, axles, pounds of food, bullets, and other items you would take. As you traverse, your characters will wisecrack with each other, you’ll meet people along the way who invite you to perform certain tasks, someone will get sick, someone will get lost, weather will affect your journey, etc. You must make decisions regarding when to rest, which paths to follow, and how quickly you can move. There are touch screen options for these decisions, so you are never more than a tap away from customizing your trip. Along the way, you will be given options to take part in mini-games, including the classic hunting game from the original, as well the new fishing game, berry collecting, gold panning, and more. Even crossing rivers has become a mini-game, as you use the accelerometer to avoid hitting rocks in your path. There will be several opportunities to earn money, which can be used to buy food, supplies, or upgrades along the way. The gameplay has even been extended to take much longer than the original. We remember completing a full game during a class period in school. Now, you might be looking at a couple of hours to finish your game.
The graphics are the most notable update. With bold colors and a cartoony look, half of the entertainment value is in watching the family’s eyes (and oxen’s eyes) pop while following a grueling pace or seeing an eagle swoop down and steal one of your children. The sound is nothing special and there are few voiceovers, despite seeing character’s mouths moving. Most of the information must be read from the screen. Controls mainly utilize touch, with a couple mini-games using the accelerometer. The game is simple enough for an elementary school child to use, yet enjoyable for adults, as well.
As there are tons of options from which to choose, random events which occur, and different paths to take, the replay value is very high. The nostalgia factor alone justifies the $4.99 price tag, though a price drop to the $3 range might be more inviting.
