The Father and Son team over at Gnizama.com is readying their upcoming puzzle game Sliders – Match 3 for release into the iTunes App Store this month. They’ve given AppSmile an opportunity to preview the game and here’s what we thought…
If you’re into puzzle games like Bejeweled, the idea behind Sliders won’t be hard to grasp. The goal is to mix and match blocks on a 5 by 5 grid into sets of at least 3. To do this, slide the rows and columns around to line up blocks as you wish. Once a set is made, the blocks are eliminated and points are obtained. Match sets of 4 or 5 blocks to gain extra points and increase your remaining time or moves.
We say time OR moves because there are 2 main styles of game play – Timed and Strategy. Timed game play starts the clock counting down from 120 seconds. Create as many sets and score the most points as you can in the allotted time. Sets made containing 4 or 5 blocks will increase the remaining time. Strategy play is similar but you are limited to moves instead of time. Choose your moves wisely since you begin with only 50. Additional moves will be added when you match sets of 4 or more. Gnizama offers another game play style too. In Free Play mode you have all the time and moves in the world. Here you can practice your stuff and learn to master Sliders.
To further challenge and delight the end user, Gnizama has developed an added feature. Special Matches can be formed by arranging blocks into difficult shapes (Cross, Plus Sign, T, Bracket, and Double Wide). If you can arrange blocks into these shapes, without eliminating the blocks in the process, bonuses are earned – easier said than done.
When the AppSmile Team first laid eyes on Sliders – Match 3, we instantly thought of the 1980’s phenomenon Rubik’s Cube. Yet, with the exception of scrolling squares and matching colors, the similarities are few. We don’t remember the original Rubik’s tallying your score, sporting clean sound effects, or providing a hip soundtrack. Sliders has all of these features. Granted, the 2-song soundtrack gets a little repetitive during long sessions of game play. But we’re betting most users will be Sliding in short increments. We would also hope that soon Gnizama allows iTunes to be played in the background.
The design of the game is smart and to the point. You’ll be entertained with classy, though simple, animations when collecting bonus and regular points. After a set is made, those blocks disappear and new ones slide into place. Sometimes the new blocks automatically form sets, giving you more points. The first time you start Sliders, a Help Menu is activated. You can return to the Help Menu any time from the Main Menu. We wish the Help Menu informed us of how many points Special Matches will generate. But maybe this will be added by release day. If you’re interrupted at any time during game play, your game will be saved for next time.
Sliders – Match 3 will mark Gnizama’s debut into the iTunes App Store. However, there’s little that would alert you to that fact. True, the user interface is a modest compared to similar games of the major players. You won’t find Wi-Fi connectivity here either. But if you want a puzzle game that will keep you on your toes while being clean and straightforward keep an eye out for Sliders!
